NBA Week 21 – SirmacTV.com

In the West, it looks like Phoenix is going to be on the outside looking in as the Suns have lost 3 in a row and sit 3 games back of 8th place Dallas. For a solid 4-5 years, the Suns reigned as one of the top teams in the West but those days are long gone. Over the last couple of years, GM Steve Kerr revamped the roster by trading for Shaq, shipping out Boris Diaw and Raja Bell, and with Amare up for free agency this summer and Nash not getting any younger, I think Phoenix’s days as a powerhouse sit far back in the rearview.

On the other side of the coin, we have Denver, who unlike Phoenix, is turning it up at the right time. The Nuggs are currently 8-2 in their last 10 and everybody appears to be healthy. A big part of Denver’s success can be credited to Birdman Andersen who is almost averaging a double-double over his last 5. For those of you not familiar with “The Birdman”, the dude has quite the story to tell. After dropping out of the University of Houston and then going undrafted in ’99, he took off across the pond and started his career in China. His energy and shot-blocking ability eventually landed him a shot with the New Orleans Hornets but he was expelled from the League in 2006 after violating the League’s anti-drug policy. The particular substance was only identified as a “drug of abuse” which means it wasn’t a performance enhancing drug or weed. After a 2-year hiatus, Andersen was re-instated and subsequently signed by Denver at the start of the season. Now he sits among the league leaders in blocked shots, second only to Dwight.

So as I watching Lebron almost get his 8th triple-double of the season vs. Dallas, I wondered if anyone will ever be able to touch Oscar Robertson’s record of 181 (41 in one season). As I was perusing, I also found a few more records that I found particularily intriguing…
Most 50-point games in a season: 45, Wilt in 1961 (this is just ridiculous)
Most minutes in a game – 69, Dale Ellis in 5OT marathon in 1989
Most assists in a game – 30, Scott Skiles in 1990 (“I got more dimes than that sprint lady” – Big L)
Most consecutive foul-outs – 6, Don Boven in 1951
Most consecutive seasons leading the league in rebounding – 7, Dennis Rodman (The Worm!)
Most pts in a half (playoffs) – 39, Eric Floyd in 1987

With the regular season winding down, the race to the MVP seems to be a 3-horse race between ‘Bron, Flash and Kobe. Pretty much all the coverage that I’ve seen only covers those 3 dudes but what about Dwight or Tony Parker? Personally, my vote goes to ‘Bron, but Dwight has been killing it all season and currently has the Magic riding a 6 game win-streak even with their starting point-guard sitting beside the Gatorade man. From a stats perspective, he’s putting up 21 and 14 which is just beastly and has the Magic sitting ahead of the defending champs. In the West, TP has the Spurs sitting in the #2 spot and has put up some of the most ridiculous stat-lines in the L this year. Last week alone he went for 30 and 10 against G-State and then followed it up with a monsterous 42 and 10 on the road in Atlanta the next night…and don’t forget his 55 and 10 back in November or his 37 and 12 vs. Dallas in February. As I mentioned before, ‘Bron gets my vote because of his extraordinarily dominant numbers and the fact he has the Cavs sitting as the best team in the league, but there’s no denying that both Dwight and Tony deserve some recognition here.

The East playoff race is slowly grinding to a halt with another team falling off the radar each week. The Raps, Knicks and Pacers are pretty much done and Jersey slipped this past week which begs the question: Where do they go from here? The Nets have some young guys to build a solid foundation around (Harris, Brook Lopez, Yi) but other than Harris, the other guys are still unproven. They also have a bunch of average spot minute guys like Trenton Hassel, Jarvis Hayes, Eduardo Najera, Keyon Dooling and Josh Boone, and quite frankly, too many roster fillers. Another thing that hurts them is the fact that 12 guys on their current roster are signed for next year, including Vince who is bringing in huge money until 2011/2012 (he’s good, but not $16+ mill good). Also, doesn’t it seem like the Nets’ fans are always louder for opposing squads?

As you may have noticed I was M.I.A last week because I got too wrapped up in the Madness to really focus on pro ball. FYI, my bracket isn’t anything to write home about, but my final four is still in tact. I got my money on Memphis.

While the NCAA has been garnering most of the hoop world’s attention for the past week, there were still some interesting observations to be made in regards to the L.

Remember me talking about Carl Landry back around the deadline? Well the up and coming Rockets forward got shot in the leg early last week after the Rockets returned home from a win in New Orleans. Around 2:30 a.m two men in another vehicle rammed into the back of Landry’s SUV, forcing him off the road into a telephone pole. As Landry got out to inspect the damage, one of the men started firing at him and grazed his leg. A brief chase ensued on foot but Landry eventually lost the gunman after hiding between two houses. "I could have been dead," Landry said. "The shooter was 10 yards or less away. I'm 6-9 and I had a bright shirt on. I don't know how he missed, but thank God he did and he hit the lower part of my leg". Landry isn’t expected to miss too much time and should be back by the end of next week.

Did any of you guys hear about Charlie V. getting in shit after he “twittered” during halftime? Apparently coach Scott Skiles wasn’t too impressed and let Charlie know that halftime wasn’t the right time to log on to Twitter. Charlie has been putting up solid digits this year for the Bucks (about 17 and 7) and should be due for a nice raise this summer, but fellow twitterer Shaq isn’t too impressed; “Attention all twitterers, I'ma tweet at halftime and not get fined like vill a new wave a whteva his name is." – Shaq

As the trade deadline came and went and teams are gearing up for the free agent class of 2010, the main focus for a lot of teams is money. In a tough economic climate where professional sports organizations aren’t immune to the exhausting effects of a recession, two teams that could be on the list for possible relocation are the Indiana Pacers and Sacramento Kings. The Pacers have reportedly lost over $200 million since 1983 and the Kings just haven’t put anything decent on the court for ages (aside from a couple years with J-Will, Webber and Vlade). The front-runners that could potentially be new destinations for each club are San Jose, Kansas City, Seattle and Vegas. Personally, I think Vancouver deserves consideration and I think its basketball landscape has grown immensely since the Grizz left about 7-8 years ago. The Grizz caught a raw deal when Stevie Franchise refused to play in Van-City after they drafted him but I think things would be different these days. High school ball is huge out West, second only in Canada to Ontario’s high school scene…UBC just played in the CIS Championship a couple weeks ago…Vancouver native Tyler Kepkay had a strong showing for Utah in the NCAA tourney…and overall, I think Canada (as a whole) has developed a new level of love and understanding of the game and has matured a great deal over the last decade.

Man, what the fuck is the deal with Nellie/Jamal Crawford in G-State? These two guys have been going back and forth for the last little while and Nellie has pretty much said that Crawford should just start packing his shit because he won’t be back in Golden State next year. Crawford didn’t see a tick of court time last week (he’s not even dressing anymore) and his agent has even been going at Nellie in the media. Now I know Nellie is cut from a different cloth and you just have to take him with a grain of salt, but at some point there has to be some compromise. Only time will tell where Crawford’s 20 ppg will end up next year.

All hail Big Pops! You gotta love this guys hustle. Since joining the Raps after a solid stint in the D-League (where he put up 26 and 13) his presence has been felt immediately. He’s currently putting up 7 and 7 in only 17 mins. of burn (JK puts up 8 and 2 in 23 mins) and is 4th in the L in rebounds per 48 minutes. The dude is still young and unpolished but he’s got the drive and hustle that you can’t teach. If Colangelo doesn’t sign him to at least a 1-year contract, then I’m cheering for the T-Wolves next year.

NBA WEEK 17

Greetings from the confines of my kitchen…

I’ve been away in Ottawa since Thursday so I didn’t really catch much ball over the weekend, however, that doesn’t make the playoff race any less intriguing.

The West looks like a zoo with 8 teams fighting for the last 7 spots. The Lakers are the only team who have really taken care of business and only 5.5 games separate the #2 seeded Spurs and the #9 Suns. It’s kinda crazy because a team like Houston or Denver could be holding down home court advantage this week, and then by next week not even be in a playoff spot. The East on the other hand is the polar opposite, with all of the top seeds pretty much secured and then 9 teams fighting for the last 3 spots or so.

One of those teams fighting for a playoff birth are the Charlotte Bobcats who have quietly assembled a well-balanced team and are making a subtle push for the post-season. At the time of this writing, they are only 3 games behind 8th place Milwaukee and with 15 of their last 22 games against sub-500 squads, they have a legit shot. The Bobcats went 3-1 last week and have some key guys stepping up. Boris Diaw averaged 22 chips a game over 4 games last week and both Okafor and Crash went for 16 and 9 over that same stretch. Ray Felton also went for 13 and 9 dimes last week and they also have a little bit of depth with guys like Vlad Radmonovic and Raja Bell playing well in addition to the development of D.J Augustin. The only thing that might hinder this squad is the fact that they play back-to-backs in 5 of their next 6 weekends.

Another team in the midst of the Eastern Conference playoff hunt is the Indiana Pacers who have been receiving huge performances from ‘The Ugly Duckling’ Troy Murphy. Murphy could always play (he’s averaging a double-double this year) and he IS getting paid a shitload of money but he’s been playing out of his mind as of late. Over the past week, Murphy averaged 19 chips to go along with 16 boards, capping it off with a 22 and 19 effort against the Nuggs.

So the Pistons brass must’ve read the blog from a few weeks ago and have said that AI will come off the bench once he returns from injury. The Pistons have been playing much better since AI went on the injured list a few games ago and all 5 starters scored in double-figures in their win against Boston on Sunday.

Speaking of Boston, Stephon Marbury is back! Fuck, as if it took this long for that saga in NYC to end. He’s now suiting up for the Celts after the Knicks decided to cut their losses and rid them of the soap-opera that is Starbury. Upon his arrival in Beantown, coach Doc Rivers told him not to worry about fitting with the team when it comes to the game, but to make sure he was fitting in the dressing room. At this point in Steph’s career, I think he’ll take the high road and be glad to accept any role Doc has lined up for him which I’m guessing will be the back-up role behind Rondo. With current back-up Gabe Pruitt taking the boob-of-the-week award for a recent DUI incident, there will be plenty of minutes kicking around for Steph. He dropped 8 pts. and 2 dimes in his Celtics debut on Friday but was much less effective in Sunday’s loss to the Pistons.

Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? Whoops, I mean Eddie Jones. Remember him? The 2-time all-star who used to kill it with the Lakers in the mid-late 90’s? Well he’s sitting at home right now in quasi-retirement after he started the season injured and just never really found his spot with the Pacers. Well, now that the deadline has passed and teams are looking at the waiver wire to see who they could pick up to help with a playoff surge, would you consider EJ an option? The guy has played 15 seasons, ranks 5th all-time in 3-pointers made and has over 80 playoff games under his belt…and even though his numbers have declined significantly with decreased minutes, he might be good to have around a group of young guys. Whether or not someone picks him up, here’s our ode to EJ…

Did anyone catch Brian Scalabrine getting injured the other night? He ended up with a mild concussion and a strained neck after a defender came down on him after a pump fake. It was kinda hilarious. I tried finding the clip but all I could find was this (which I may have posted a while back)…

So as one superstar goes on the injured list, another is close to a return. Gilbert Arenas is finally practicing with full contact after 3 knee surgeries in the last 2 years. It’s still uncertain whether he’ll suit up for the Wiz this year since their season is already in the tank but it’s good to see Gil at least taking his time to come back. He tried coming back early last year and ended up needing another surgery so my guess is that he’ll wait until next year to make his return…afterall, we all know what happened to T-Mac. While his return is in question, this superfan’s love certainly is not…I’m still not sure what to think haha…

NBA Week 16 – SirmacTV.com

Man, these weeks come and go quickly don’t they?

At least we had some solid ball to get us through…

The first few nights of games after the all-star break weren’t much to write home about, but things kicked into gear as the week progressed.

Thursday night saw Utah take down the Celts by 5 which once again makes you think that they could be contenders. They just beat the Lakers a couple weeks back and with The Paperboy Paul Millsap playing like a beast and Carlos Boozer expecting to return by next week, things are only looking up. Mix that with Deron Williams’ play of late (avg. 27 and 11 over his last 7) and the emergence of Ronnie Brewer at the 2-spot (17 ppg over his last 14) and I think they could give the Lakers a run if Bynum doesn’t recover as scheduled. The Jazz also took down New Orleans on Saturday night which saw Williams going toe-to-toe with Chris Paul which is never a disappoinment. Both of these cats have nasty handles and wet jumpers but Williams got the best of CP3 posting up 20 and 13 in a Jazz win (CP3 put up 24 and 7). In all fairness, N.O was coming off a tough OT loss to the Lakers the night before where Mamba put up 39 chips and ripped out N.O’s heart in the extra frame.

The same night of the Lakers/Hornets thriller, ‘Bron was up to his antics again and hung 55 on the helpless Bucks. Normally when he puts up big numbers, it involves a lot of dunks and trips to the charity stripe but in this game he was lighting up the Bucks from beyond the arc. WELL beyond the arc. Richard Jefferson must have sore retina’s cuz ‘Bron was knockin’ shit down in his eye all night...but don’t take my word for it, check the clip…

So the trade deadline came and went with nothing significant really going down but there were certainly a couple teams extremely active. The most active of the bunch had to be the Chicago Bulls who shipped out 6 players and brought in 5 new faces for their playoff push. The most notable names joining the Bulls are John Salmons and Brad Miller (from Sac-Town) and Tim Thomas (from the Knicks) who brings some solid veteran leadership on a relatively young Bulls squad.

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve kept saying I was gonna drop a little piece about the challenges that Jerry Colangelo faces as the Raps GM…but since I simply don’t have the time, here’s the jist of it; The moves he makes over the summer (as well as next year) will ultimately define him as a GM. When Bosh re-signed with the Raps a little while back, things were on the upswing and the Raps were progressing towards becoming a legit threat coming out of the East. However, with the Raps season turning a little sour this year, rumours have already started that Bosh is going to jet town. Colangelo has already committed to making Bosh the franchise player and to me, when shit goes bad, that means that you don’t move him, but you move the pieces around him. It’s the exact same thing that Kevin McHale went through in Minnesota with KG and that Mitch Kupchak faced in LA with Kobe. For years, McHale unsuccessfully tried finding the right pieces to fit with KG (bringing in Steph, Terrell Brandon, Sam I Am, Sprewell etc.) but things never panned out and KG eventually went to Boston after 12 years of no real success. On the flipside, you have Mitch Kupchak who was forced to turn the Lakers back into a contender after Mamba threatened to bounce town. With a little bit of patience and the right moves here and there, Kupchak now looks like a genius as the Lakers are arguably the best team in the Association and Kobe is happily content. In the end, the moves Colangelo makes over the next year and half will ultimately strengthen his position as one of the top GM’s in the game, or mark him as a GM who just couldn’t get it done. Time will tell…

Now speaking of Kupchak, Kobe and the Lakers, you have to give them credit for sticking with their young guys and believing in the guys already on the roster. Although Kupchak has made some key trades (bringing in Gasol and Ariza), a lot of their success has to do with Kupchak’s patience in developing guys like Bynum, Vujacic, Farmar, and Walton, all of whom make valuable contributions. Another guy the Lakers believed in was Lamar Odom who has been in trade talks since he came into the damn league. Odom is currently balling out of control putting up 18 chips and pulling in 16 boards a game over his last 6. 16 boards a game!!! Equally impressive is the fact he’s shooting 52% from the field over that same stretch and doesn’t need a lot of shots to be effective.

Greetings, heathens…

That was a pleasant weekend now, wasn’t it?

Although all sports have their all-star weekends where they put their stars on a single stage to be celebrated, nobody does it quite as well as the NBA. I mean, the home-run derby is cool and the hardest shot contest can be funny when someone registers a measly attempt, but when it comes to the actual game itself, most people yawn their way through it, if they even tuned-in at all.

This is not the case with the NBA. In the NBA, players who aren’t even invited to participate in any events still show up, as opposed to the NHL who had to start fining players because they WEREN’T showing up. The bottom-line here is that the NBA knows how to market their game and they execute their plan every year. This year was no different although I do have some small beefs.

This year’s event went down in Phoenix with the Rookie/Sophomore Challenge kicking things off on Friday night. Normally this game can get a little carried away with guy’s stepping beyond their limits trying to find their way into a highlight…which usually results in a turnover or a botched dunk. Regardless, this game is still fun to watch because you can get a glimpse of the guys that will one day be the faces of the league. This year’s game was much closer than years past, with the Rooks leading the way most of the game. However, “big game” snub, Kevin Durant, went off for 30 chips in the 2nd half and led the Sophomore’s to their 7th consecutive victory. KD was the game’s MVP, finishing with 46 chips which broke Amare’s Stoudemire’s previous record of 36. Michael Beasley finished with 29 to lead the Rooks who were without Greg Oden who was sitting out with sore left-knee. Will this dude ever get healthy?

Next up was All-Star Saturday where upsets were the order of the day. In the Skills competition, super-rook Derrick Rose took home honors as he destroyed the field (including Tony Parker and Devin Harris) while barely breaking a sweat. Next up was the 3-point contest where Daequan Cook dethroned Jason Kapono as the king behind the arc after Kapono didn’t even make it to the finals. However the biggest upset came towards the end of the night when little Nate Robinson took out returning champ and heavy favorite Dwight Howard in the Slam Dunk Contest. Now although there were some nasty spikes, I gotta say I wouldn’t even put it in my top 5 contests of years past. I mean Vince back in 2000, J-Rich in 03, 04, Dwight last year…those are contests that I’ll remember. But for me, this contest lacked something. JR Smith was subpar, Rudy was nice but took too many attempts and Dwight went from having all new dunks last year, to not really maxing out on his capabilities this year. Nate’s dunk over Dwight was the highlight for a lot of people I’ve talked to, but I don’t think he should’ve even been in the finals after his dunk where he jumped off Wilson Chandler’s back. Like c’mon man, are you kidding me? I used to do that at the Y when I was like 12! It should’ve been 7’s across the board but for some reason the judges were feeling it and were giving it 8’s and 9’s which leads me to my next point; A lot of people are saying the whole thing was staged and the whole “Krypto-Nate” vs. “Superman” thing was a predestined storyline from the start. I feel that. I don’t necessarily think the whole thing was staged and I give the NBA a lot of credit for its ability to draw fans in, but I think the “entertainment” and “showmanship” was a little overboard this year and it took away from the athlete’s physical talents. It seemed as though guys spent more time figuring out what they were gonna do before and after their dunk rather than the dunk itself. Maybe I’m just old-school, but would you ever see Mike going into a phone booth and coming out with a skin tight mini-jersey (Aren’t those for chicks?)? What’s gonna happen next year? Is LeBron going to jump over a flaming pit of cobra’s while eating a piece of cheesecake in a Riddler costume? Just throwdown, man. I say the NBA should bring in some outside cats to make the NBA dudes step their game up. This dude is the same size as Nate and would crush him…

Well now that we have that rant out of the way (sorry guys), we can revert our attention back to the whole point of the weekend; The All-Star game.

Sunday’s All-Star game brought in an estimated 6.8 million viewers (up 8% from last year) and although the game was a blowout, it was still worth watching. Shaq was playing like it was the Laker-years, Dwight took Yao to the spa 3 mins. into the game, CP3 was breakin’ dudes off, Kobe and ‘Bron each went off for 20+, Amare and Brandon Roy threw down some nice crams and even Mo Williams proved that he belonged on the East’s roster from the start. The only guys who didn’t get much shine were Danny Granger and Joe Johnson who put up a donut in the pts. column but still got himself in the game log…with a game-high 5 TO’s. I’m sure he’ll have another chance to redeem himself in future years though.
Like I said, the game was a blowout with the West almost 30-piecing the East 146-119, and Shaq and Kobe took home co-MVP honours. This was the first time Kobe and Shaq had been on the same team since the Laker days and it was refreshing to see them on a mature level (especially if you read that Phil Jackson book that I recommended back in Week 9? 10? …umm, I dunno, it was after Christmas though!). After the game, Kobe told Shaq to take the trophy home to give it to his sons. You see kids, we can all get along!

My only quarrel with the game was the looooong half-time show and the fact that the game took almost 3.5 hours to finish when regular games take about 2.5. Other than that, it was bliss.

Now that the all-star weekend is over, teams are back to the grind and you can damn sure bet that some moves will be made before Thursday’s deadline. I know the O’Neal/Marion trade went down and Tyson Chandler just got dealt to the Thunder, but I’m too tired to provide my 2 cents right now. If you’re really dying to know my take, holler forth. I’ll also try and hit you guys with that Colangelo article I said I was gonna post last week. I procrastinate, so what?

Anyways, what you guys really need to be doing is sending Sirmac an email telling him to send my ass to cover the All-Star game next year…it’ll be a business expense!

NBA WEEK 15

Hey freaks!

With the trade winds swirling around feverishly in Toronto, I figured I’d write a special limited edition “Raptor Trade Rumour” blog for all the dedicated Raps fans out there.

Amongst all of the trade rumours, the most prominent one revolves around Raps center Jermaine O’Neal. Although the rumour mill has been working overtime for awhile now (with no results), the possibility of J.O being moved is still very realistic and I think it’d be huge for Toronto to get his $44 mill off the books (21.3 this year, 22.9 next). As has been well-documented throughout the NBA blogosphere, the front-runner in the O’Neal sweepstakes are the Miami Heat who are looking to unload Shawn Marion and probably Marcus Banks (to get rid of his contract). If Colangelo were considering this deal, the free cap space is probably what he would see as the biggest asset coming back.

Another shot in the dark could be moving O’Neal to Washington along with an extra body (maybe Moon?) or a future draft pick in exchange for Caron Butler. The Wizards aren’t shopping Butler around but have made it known that he is definitely available and they are willing to listen to offers. I think this deal works for both squads as Butler provides the Raptors with the athletic and aggressive swingman they need, and the Wiz get a true center. For years now, the Wiz and their fans have been subjected to the inconsistencies and often lackluster productivity from guys like Brendan Haywood and Etan Thomas, and even though Andray Blatche is developing into a solid player, he’s really more of a 4. If the Wiz hold on to Antawn Jameson and Arenas gets healthy, they could have a pretty sick starting 5. Ditto for the Raps who would go with Bargnani, Bosh, Butler, Parker and Calderon. I don’t think the Wiz would do a deal straight up because of the age difference between O’Neal and Butler, which is why I think the Wiz would seek out an additional draft pick as well.

Now coming off the heels of Stephen A. Smith’s comments regarding Chris Bosh wanting out of Toronto, I feel it’s a possibility that he could jet town, but I wouldn’t bet the house quite yet. That said, it may be worthwhile to move him now when you can still get the utmost value for him…but that doesn’t mean I would be proactively shopping the all-star power forward around. The Heat are once again one of the teams that are supposedly interested in Bosh, but it’s up to Pat Riley to come to the table with the right deal and I’m sure everybody knows it’s not going to come cheap. Shawn Marion isn’t enough. I personally wouldn’t accept a deal without Beasley being included.

Another place Bosh could end up is in New York, where the Knicks hope to lure Lebron on 2010. The Knicks are clearly gunning for multiple superstars come 2010 so I think they’d be willing to give up some key chips in the process. I think a deal that is feasible would be Bosh for Chandler/Lee/Gallinari and Roberson. As I said a couple weeks ago, Chandler is going to be an all-star in the next couple of years and the same goes for David Lee (who narrowly missed out on being an all-star THIS year). Gallinari would be with his pal Bargnani and the addition of Roberson would allow the Raps to put Will Solomon on waivers and allow Roko Ukic to develop quicker. Oh, and the Raps would also receive a fuckload of cap relief (around $17M over the next 2 years…more than enough to bring in another quality player). If this deal were to go through, the Raps would be looking at a starting 5 of Bargnani, Lee, Chandler, Parker and Calderon with J.O, Moon and Kapono coming off the bench.

Now of course, some of these trades have just been imaginatively fabricated and more than likely will not happen, but while everyone is focused on the blockbuster deals, sometimes the smaller ones are just as important.

One player I would absolutely love to see moved is Jason Kapono (and not just so I wouldn’t have to hear Matt Devlin refer to him as “J-Killa” anymore). Kapono is set to earn an average of $6M/year over the next 3 years which I think is too hefty a price-tag for a guy averaging 7, 2 and 2. Factor in his lack of lateral quickness, the inability to create his own shot as well as his sub-par D, and there isn’t much upside to his potential. What you see is what you get. Sure he’s a threat on the perimeter and can stretch the D if opposing teams go zone, but is that worth $6M a year? Not by my estimation. So why would other teams want him then? Well, like I just mentioned, he’s a threat on the perimeter, can stretch the D and guys will be hesitant to leave him to double-team. I think the issue is that Kapono should be a guy who just plays spot minutes, not a guy who is in the regular rotation like he is in Toronto. He’s a 15 mpg type guy…not 25 mpg. I think a lot of teams gunning for a playoff run will see the value of Kapono as a spot minute guy, and just may be baited into making a trade.

One team I think that may be interested in a guy like Kapono is the Denver Nuggets. Bracing for a deep playoff run, Kapono could be an asset when guys go to double ‘Melo in the post or go to help on Chauncey when he drives. Kapono would be much more efficient behind the arc than say, Dahntay Jones. In return, it would be nice to grab J.R Smith, who would be that slashing athletic swingman that the Raps need. J.R is putting up 14/4/3 at only $4M for the year, and although his attitude has come into question on several occasions, his contract expires at the end of the year anyways…which means more cap room! Now I’m pretty sure the Nuggs/Raps have already discussed this deal and since it never happened the first time, I doubt it will happen before the deadline…HOWEVER…what about Lenias Kleiza and a future 2nd rounder for Kapono? I’ve always been a big fan of Kleiza, who’s young, tough, rugged and doesn’t shy away from physical play. He’s also putting up 10 chips, 4 boards and a dime a game for only $2M/year over the next 2 years so this would be a great deal for the Raps if they could get it done.

Another team that I could see as being interested are the Houston Rockets, who could use some outside shooting since Luther Head just never developed into the player they thought he’d be (at least not yet) and Chuck Hayes is airballing free-throws. In return for Kapono, I think the best choice would be Carl Landry, although I’m not sure the Rockets would be willing to part with the 2nd year forward. Landry has a tremendous upside and is putting up 9 chips, 5 boards and a dime a game for only 3M/year over the next 3. If J.O or Bosh get dealt, Landry would be a great addition as he adds some interior toughness and rebounding. One thing that could prevent this deal from happening however is the fact that the Rockets basically already have a much cheaper version of Kapono in Brent Barry. Damn…

In the end, the onus is on Bryan Colangelo to improve this team and he’s the one holding the chips. I’ll try and hit you guys with a special remix later this week, speaking about Colangelo and how his next move could be his defining one…

Happy trails Stevie Francis. The Memphis Grizzlies recently put the former star on waivers, potentially ending Franchise’s career for good. A former NBA star known for his explosive hops and ill crossover, I can’t recall a player within my lifetime who has seen such a fast decline from stardom. From about 2000-2004, you couldn’t have had a conversation about the best guards in the L without mentioning Francis. After leaving the Rockets in ‘04 and posting career lows with the Magic in ’05, Francis made his way to the Big Apple where he had a subpar tenure with the Knicks in ‘06. The Knicks eventually traded Francis to the Blazers who pretty much slapped him in the face and said “We don’t want you” and bought out his contract. He ended up heading to Houston for a second cup of coffee with the Rockets, but injuries sidelined him for the better part of two years and he found himself at the end of the bench. About a month and half ago the Rockets dealt him to Memphis for a new pop machine (just kidding) and the rest, as they say, is history. It kinda makes me feel old as I sit here and type this because he’s the first guy that I’ve actually watched from start to finish (and have been old enough to really remember his earlier years). I have a feeling there’s someone out there who has a 10-day contract for him but we’ll just have to wait and see…

For the Throwback Clip of the Week, it’s only right I give the nod to Franchise even though these clips are only like 7-8 years old. The first clip is dunks, the second are clips of his once-deadly handle (please note the Moochie Norris sighting around the 0:14 mark of the first clip haha…).

Just last week I was talking about how AI should come off the bench for the Pistons, which made me wonder why dudes care so much about starting. A couple days later, I got into a discussion about guys who come off the bench but could very well start for a number of squads. Guys like Kirilenko, Ginobli and Barbosa were obvious choices, but one guy I never thought about was Trevor Ariza. As it turns out, Ariza doesn’t like to start and has told the Lakers coaching staff that he prefers to come off the bench. I dig that. The NBA is filled with too many selfish cats so I can appreciate when a player like Ariza does something like that. Also, FYI, in his one start this season, Ariza missed all of his field-goal attempts and ended up with only 4 chips (from the charity stripe) in 33 minutes. He averages 9 ppg in 24 mins. as a reserve.

As some of you may have noticed, I sometimes mention stuff that isn’t exactly NBA-related, but is entertaining none-the-less. This is one of those times. Aron up at Dime Magazine brought this clip to my attention and I just had to share it…Sammy The Owl gets tossed…

Let it be known; Stephen A. Smith is an idiot. Known for his baseless analysis and excessive hyperbole, Smith has to be the worst reporter/analyst that ESPN has on its payroll. His latest grab for attention comes in the form of rumors surrounding Chris Bosh. Smith is reporting that CB4 approached Raps GM Bryan Colangelo last week and put it on the table that he wanted out, and isn’t going to re-sign in 2010. Both Bosh and Colangelo promptly dismissed the story and Colangelo defiantly stated that Bosh was NOT on the trading block. Now of course I can’t confirm whether or not Bosh told Colangelo he was gonna jet, but what I do know is that if he DID say that, Stephen A. Smith wouldn’t be the guy to know. Bosh and Smith have a bit history after Smith compared Bosh’s game to long-time scrub Manute Bol…Bosh eventually contacted Smith and let him know he felt disrespected so I can’t see how Smith would be a guy close enough to the situation to really know what’s going.

The team of the week has got to be the Portland Trailblazers who went 4-0 last week and continue to prove they’re a legit threat coming out of the West. The Blazers currently sit at 30-19 and are holding down the 4th seed in the West, but the scariest thing to consider is that this is the youngest team in the NBA. Just think…Brandon Roy, Channing Frye, Larmarcus Aldredge, Rudy Fernandez, Greg Oden, Nicholas Batum, Travis Outlaw, Jerryd Bayless etc…ALL these dudes are young and all are capable of becoming solid primetime players. Things could get scary.

Whether he’s beefing with Lebron, being the subject of Jay-Z diss tracks or posting his credit card number on his MySpace, Deshawn Stevenson is a walking circus. Although he eventually cancelled his credit card and re-posed with his new one (covering the first few digits this time) the guy still has a few knobs loose. After deciding to go with an all-80’s wardrobe for this season (some of the gear is fresh, I can’t lie), Deshawn was quoted as saying “I’m the new Dennis Rodman”. The irony of it all is that I have an old issue of SLAM from when D-Steve was just coming out of highschool with a subject header that reads “Stevenson mixes Kobe Bryant’s game with Tim Duncan’s Attitude”. Ummm, so when they say Kobe Bryant, did they mean the high scoring, perennial all-star Kobe Bryant? Stevenson has never put up more than 11 ppg in a season. But when they say Tim Duncan, they mean the calm, reserved, and mild-mannered Tim Duncan, right? Right???...

That’s it for this week heathens, but if I could give you one game to watch this week, it’d be the Celts vs. Lakers on Thursday night. The last time these squads met was on Christmas with the Lakers defending their homecourt, winning by 9. This game is in Beantown and the Celts will undoubtedly be seeking revenge so tune in if you’re not working, getting inebriated, having sex, playing pogs...

Hola Amigos!

Well it’s my first time checking in since I came back from a much needed vacay, but while a few things changed, a lot stayed the same...such as the Cavs still being unbeaten at home, and Jose still having his consecutive free-throw streak in tact (he’s only 12 away from the record!). I still find it insane that the Cavs are entering into Feb. and still haven’t lost a game at home, but while that is impressive, it’ll all be about winning on the road when the playoffs roll around. If that holds true, I think the Magic could be the team coming out of the East in late-May.

When I left down south a few weeks back, Detroit was starting to hit their stride and we’re riding a 7-game win streak, but after some issues with the log jam at the guard positions (regarding who should start), the Pistons have lost 8 of their last 10. Personally, I like Rip and Stuckey starting with AI coming off the bench as the 6th man. AI adds instant scoring and you’ll never have to worry about your 2nd unit being outplayed. In the end, it’s not who starts the game, it’s who finishes…which is why I’ve always wondered why dudes bitch about not starting. I guess it’s an ego thing.

I’m giving Josh Smith the dunk of the year so far with his cram on Steve Nash, but you had to have known Iggy’s crowning of Dampier and Al Thornton’s facial on poor Solomon Jones we’re bound to end up in Gliz’s weekly review. J-Smoove’s cram on Nash brought back memories of Ricky Buckets giving Nash the business like 5-6 years ago…

Back in November I was gonna write about Clips rook Eric Gordon after he hung 25 on CP3 and the Hornets and then gave Chauncey and the Nuggets 24 the next night. While I I usually just jot down notes for the blog throughout the week, my organizational skills are sub-par and I ended up losing those notes…and subsequently, forgot about our friend Eric. Well, upon my arrival home, I found those notes which prompted me to see how his season was progressing. The results; He’s gotta be a top 5 rook this year. Easy. Up to this point, Rose and Mayo are the heavy favorites and Oden is starting to put up double-doubles like it’s nobody’s business, but Gordon has been quietly doing his thing on the west coast. Towards the end of December and into early January, Gordon strung together 6 straight 20+ point games going up against guys like Jason Terry and Nash (man, he keeps coming up on the shitty end of the stick, doesn’t he?). Since then, he’s scored in double-digits in the last 18 games and dropped 41 chips against OKC on Friday. The NBA just recently punched his ticket to participate in the T-Mobile Rookie/Sophomore Challenge during All-Star weekend as well.

With the trade deadline just over 3 weeks away, there are a handful of names that continue popping up such as Larry Hughes, Mike Miller and of course J.O and Shawn Marion. With the emergence of Michael Beasely at the SF/PF spot, Marion is expendible and the Heat are looking for a center. With J.O being the best center available and the Raps looking for some much needed perimeter D, I think this deal is 70% done. O’Neal has already conceded he thinks he’ll be down south in a few weeks, and Pat Riley pretty much said all he’s waiting for was to see if O’Neal is healthy enough. However, Marion has been on the shelf the last couple games so his health may come into play as well.

Another reason why this deal could take place is because Andrea Bargnani is finally showing signs of why he was taken #1 overall back in ’06. Barg’s achille heel over the last 2+ years has been his consistency and confidence (or lack thereof…) but he’s finally starting to bring it together. Over his last 17 games, he’s averaged just under 21 ppg and 7 rpg and has been looking more comfortable with each passing game. To put that in perspective, he’s averaged more ppg over his last 17 than guys like ‘Melo, Duncan, Joe Johnson, Amare and a slew of other bonafide scorers. We’ve seen Andrea string together a few solid games here and there but never before have we seen him play this well for such a long stretch. If he keeps it up, it’s just another reason to let J.O go.

I gotta start out this week by sending out some birthday shots to my man Sirmac! Happy birthday man…

Now back to the hardwood…(That’s what she said!)

For Christmas, my wifey’s sister bought me “The Last Season: A Team In Search Of Its Soul” by Phil Jackson which is basically The Zen Master’s journal from the 03-04 season. If you remember, that’s the year the Lakers signed Karl Malone and Gary Payton in the off-season, the Kobe vs. Shaq rivalry was at a fever-pitch and Kobe was also flying back and forth to Colorado for his sexual assault court hearings. The book is both interesting and well-written and Phil provides intriguing insight into how he has learned to manage personalities and egos. One of the main issues the book centers around is the Shaq/Kobe beef which to me, after reading this book, was the most juvenile and immature occurrence I’ve ever came across in professional sports. A wise sage said that it takes two to fight, but for the most part, Kobe was the hand over-rocking the cradle in this case. Phil even started seeing a shrink just so he could communicate with Kobe without damaging their relationship or Kobe’s ego. Throughout the book, Phil makes mention of Kobe’s anger and temper tantrums and even goes so far as to say he is the epitome of today’s selfish player. I’m sure Kobe has matured since then (afterall, the book was written like 5 years ago) but it was still interesting to see things from Phil’s angle. If you get the chance, read this book.

Charles, Charles, Charles...there’s nothing wrong with getting wasted on New Year’s… and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to cop some head…but getting wasted, driving, picking up another girl who's NOT your wife and then getting busted??? Shit man…

The same night when Charles was getting his freak on, George Karl was busy snatching up his 900th career coaching win as his Denver Nuggets took down the Raps. Karl joins an elite group consisting of guys like Red Auerbach, Pat Riley and the aforementioned Phil Jackson and currently sits in 10th on the all-time wins list. I watched a couple Denver practices when NBATV had that behind-the-scenes shit going on during training camp and Karl seems pretty laid back. To further my point, he cracked a beer in the Nuggets dressing room after the win in Toronto and said he prefers a cold beer over champagne. “After a win, beer tastes like champagne anyways."

Break up the Pistons! The boys in The D have been tearing it up lately and are currently riding a 7-game win streak. With guys like Rip, AI, ‘Sheed, Tayshaun etc., they should be tearing it up anyways, but up until their recent streak, they’ve pretty much been mediocre at best. The brightest spot during their streak is undoubtedly the play of Rodney Stuckey who has been lighting it up since being injected into the starting line up. Personally, I always compared Stuckey to D-Wade based on their size (Stuckey 6’5, 205, Wade 6’4, 215) and style of play but now Stuckey is putting up some serious digits as well. Fresh off a 40-point outing the week before, Stuckey hung 38 chips on Sacramento this past week and followed it up with another 24 against the Clips. He also copped Player of the Week honours in the Eastern Conference and if he keeps it up, the Pistons could find themselves knocking on the Cavs door in the Central division.

Rookie Check-Up: Anthony Morrow
Remember awhile back when Warriors guard Anthony Morrow was shredding teams up? Well now, not so much. Morrow’s minutes have been significantly decreasing over the last couple weeks and his scoring average is down to just over 9 chips a game compared to around 15 chips a game just about a month ago. A lot of it certainly has to do with his minutes but playing for a Don Nelson coached team, what do you expect? Nellie is notorious for giving guys 30+ mins. one night and giving them 5 the next and Morrow is no different. Last week Morrow clocked 8 mins. and 2 pts. in a loss to the Clips, and then clocked just 2 mins. and 0 pts. in another loss to the…Thunder. Wamp wamp waaaaamp.

Wilson Chandler. I’ve been meaning to mention this guy for a couple weeks now and how the Raps should trade Kapono and Hump for him. The Raps need an athletic, slashing swingman who can create his own shot and isn’t a liability on the defensive end. Enter Chandler. He’s an above average defender, solid rebounder, can score (14 ppg), is only in his 2nd year and best of all, is dirt cheap (only $7.5 mill over the next 4 years). Once the Knicks get Maybury’s insane contract off the books, they’ll have plenty of room for Hump and Kapono and even if they don’t intend on keeping these guys, they’re both decent trading chips in the future. What up y’all? Everyone have a good Christmas? With the slate of games on Christmas Day how could you not? Aside from the Orlando/New Orleans game (which was uggggly), you couldn’t really go wrong by watching any of the others; Roger Mason knocked down a game-winning 3 to lift San An over Phx…the Cavs/Wiz went right down to the wire (surprisingly!)…Dirk and the Mavs squeeked by Portland…and then of course you had the Celts/Lakers.

The C’s/Lakers was a hard-fought battle with the Lakers eventually trumping the Celtics and putting an end to their franchise record 19-game win streak. The game itself was a little sloppy at times with Pau Gasol going 0-for in the first quarter, Ray Allen shooting just 35% for the game and Rajon Rondo getting into foul trouble. At one point, Rondo and Ray-Ray even got into it running back on D until Pierce stepped in and pushed em’ away. In the end, it was ultimately the Lakers “D” that won them the game as they forced some key turnovers in the 4th and got the Staples crowd back into the game.

The Lakers and Celts had to keep their stars on the floor in crunch time which is a little different than normal because quite frankly, there isn’t usually crunch time with these teams. A common trend with top squads in the L is that they often beat down teams and can then rest their stars in the 4th quarter which is advantageous for obvious reasons. But what exactly does this mean? Well looking at the Raps, CB4 and Jose both log about 40 mins/game compared to guys like ‘Bron, Kobe, Garnett etc. who all clock about 35 mins./game. Now it’s only about a 5 mins/game difference but if you multiply that by the 82 game season, Jose and CB4 will have logged another 10+ games worth of minutes so come the playoff grind, they’re fatigued. Teams like the Cavs, Lakers and Celts are braced for a deep playoff run and you have to give credit to the coaches for managing minutes and keeping their guys well-rested.

Speaking of the Cavs, Lakers and Celts, there has never been a year where more teams have had such a strong start. As of Sunday, the Celts sit at 27-4, the Cavs are 26-4 and the Lakers are 25-5…and you have to give honourable mention to Orlando at 24-6. Of course you have the 95-96 Bulls who started 40-3 (and finished an NBA record 72-10) or the 71-72 Lakers who went 37-3, but to have this many teams still killing as we go into January is pretty extraordinary. Now it’ll just be a matter of seeing who’s built to last and whether or not the injury bug rears its ugly head.

To go along with the whole idea of being built to last, I recently found out that only three players have ever played 20 seasons or more in the NBA; Kevin Willis, Robert Parrish and of course, Kareem. The youngest of the three to retire was Kareem, at 42. However, in this day and age, where so many kids have entered the L straight out of high school (for better or for worse), 20 seasons doesn’t seem too outlandish for the athletes of today. Perhaps the NBA could very well see its first 25-year man! Guys like ‘Bron, KG and Kobe will all enter their 20th season at 37 and 38 years old (if they choose to keep playing) and given the extreme advances in health and nutrition compared to when Kareem was still ballin’ with those goggles on, a 25-year career may not be such a stretch.

So the NBA All-Star game is only about a month and half away, and the league just recently announced the participants in the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest. Defending his crown will be Dwight Howard who has to be the favorite going in. Alongside Dwight will be Rudy Gay (who I think is the only guy who can take out Dwight), past dunk contest winner Nate Robinson, and then a fourth participant who the fans get to decide (either Russell Westbrook, Joe Alexander or Rudy Fernandez). Like I said, Dwight has to be the heavy favorite going-in but I think if Rudy Gay is creative enough, he can take it down. Nate Rob has insaaaane hops but I just don’t think he’s gonna bring anything we haven’t already seen before. Over the last couple weeks, there have been numerous trade winds in Raptorland including Kapono going to Denver for J.R Smith (which the Nuggs turned down) and also some other rumours including Jose bouncing for Steve Nash (with spare parts included). I’m pretty sure the Jose/Nash deal had no serious truth behind it and was pure speculation, and looking at where the two players in their careers, it’d be a stupid move to deal Jose for an aging Nash. I’m definitely an advocate for Nash and think it would be great for him to finish his career with Canada’s team, but in all reality, his best years are behind him and his legs have 6 more years of NBA run on them than Jose’s. From a statistical standpoint, both of their numbers are virtually identical so it’s not like you’d be gaining anything from that standpoint either. Jose averages 13, 9 and 3 while Nash puts up 15, 8 and 3. Nash is also 2nd in the L in turnovers while Jose is down around 60th or so. No deal.

Anyways, I’ll check y’all next week but for now, I’m out like Nate Rob’s chance at another dunk title…
