NBA Week 13 – SirmacTV.com

Well it’s my first time checking in since I came back from a much needed vacay, but while a few things changed, a lot stayed the same...such as the Cavs still being unbeaten at home, and Jose still having his consecutive free-throw streak in tact (he’s only 12 away from the record!). I still find it insane that the Cavs are entering into Feb. and still haven’t lost a game at home, but while that is impressive, it’ll all be about winning on the road when the playoffs roll around. If that holds true, I think the Magic could be the team coming out of the East in late-May.

When I left down south a few weeks back, Detroit was starting to hit their stride and we’re riding a 7-game win streak, but after some issues with the log jam at the guard positions (regarding who should start), the Pistons have lost 8 of their last 10. Personally, I like Rip and Stuckey starting with AI coming off the bench as the 6th man. AI adds instant scoring and you’ll never have to worry about your 2nd unit being outplayed. In the end, it’s not who starts the game, it’s who finishes…which is why I’ve always wondered why dudes bitch about not starting. I guess it’s an ego thing.

I’m giving Josh Smith the dunk of the year so far with his cram on Steve Nash, but you had to have known Iggy’s crowning of Dampier and Al Thornton’s facial on poor Solomon Jones we’re bound to end up in Gliz’s weekly review. J-Smoove’s cram on Nash brought back memories of Ricky Buckets giving Nash the business like 5-6 years ago…

Back in November I was gonna write about Clips rook Eric Gordon after he hung 25 on CP3 and the Hornets and then gave Chauncey and the Nuggets 24 the next night. While I I usually just jot down notes for the blog throughout the week, my organizational skills are sub-par and I ended up losing those notes…and subsequently, forgot about our friend Eric. Well, upon my arrival home, I found those notes which prompted me to see how his season was progressing. The results; He’s gotta be a top 5 rook this year. Easy. Up to this point, Rose and Mayo are the heavy favorites and Oden is starting to put up double-doubles like it’s nobody’s business, but Gordon has been quietly doing his thing on the west coast. Towards the end of December and into early January, Gordon strung together 6 straight 20+ point games going up against guys like Jason Terry and Nash (man, he keeps coming up on the shitty end of the stick, doesn’t he?). Since then, he’s scored in double-digits in the last 18 games and dropped 41 chips against OKC on Friday. The NBA just recently punched his ticket to participate in the T-Mobile Rookie/Sophomore Challenge during All-Star weekend as well.

With the trade deadline just over 3 weeks away, there are a handful of names that continue popping up such as Larry Hughes, Mike Miller and of course J.O and Shawn Marion. With the emergence of Michael Beasely at the SF/PF spot, Marion is expendible and the Heat are looking for a center. With J.O being the best center available and the Raps looking for some much needed perimeter D, I think this deal is 70% done. O’Neal has already conceded he thinks he’ll be down south in a few weeks, and Pat Riley pretty much said all he’s waiting for was to see if O’Neal is healthy enough. However, Marion has been on the shelf the last couple games so his health may come into play as well.

Another reason why this deal could take place is because Andrea Bargnani is finally showing signs of why he was taken #1 overall back in ’06. Barg’s achille heel over the last 2+ years has been his consistency and confidence (or lack thereof…) but he’s finally starting to bring it together. Over his last 17 games, he’s averaged just under 21 ppg and 7 rpg and has been looking more comfortable with each passing game. To put that in perspective, he’s averaged more ppg over his last 17 than guys like ‘Melo, Duncan, Joe Johnson, Amare and a slew of other bonafide scorers. We’ve seen Andrea string together a few solid games here and there but never before have we seen him play this well for such a long stretch. If he keeps it up, it’s just another reason to let J.O go.

I gotta start out this week by sending out some birthday shots to my man Sirmac! Happy birthday man…

Now back to the hardwood…(That’s what she said!)

For Christmas, my wifey’s sister bought me “The Last Season: A Team In Search Of Its Soul” by Phil Jackson which is basically The Zen Master’s journal from the 03-04 season. If you remember, that’s the year the Lakers signed Karl Malone and Gary Payton in the off-season, the Kobe vs. Shaq rivalry was at a fever-pitch and Kobe was also flying back and forth to Colorado for his sexual assault court hearings. The book is both interesting and well-written and Phil provides intriguing insight into how he has learned to manage personalities and egos. One of the main issues the book centers around is the Shaq/Kobe beef which to me, after reading this book, was the most juvenile and immature occurrence I’ve ever came across in professional sports. A wise sage said that it takes two to fight, but for the most part, Kobe was the hand over-rocking the cradle in this case. Phil even started seeing a shrink just so he could communicate with Kobe without damaging their relationship or Kobe’s ego. Throughout the book, Phil makes mention of Kobe’s anger and temper tantrums and even goes so far as to say he is the epitome of today’s selfish player. I’m sure Kobe has matured since then (afterall, the book was written like 5 years ago) but it was still interesting to see things from Phil’s angle. If you get the chance, read this book.

Charles, Charles, Charles...there’s nothing wrong with getting wasted on New Year’s… and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to cop some head…but getting wasted, driving, picking up another girl who's NOT your wife and then getting busted??? Shit man…

The same night when Charles was getting his freak on, George Karl was busy snatching up his 900th career coaching win as his Denver Nuggets took down the Raps. Karl joins an elite group consisting of guys like Red Auerbach, Pat Riley and the aforementioned Phil Jackson and currently sits in 10th on the all-time wins list. I watched a couple Denver practices when NBATV had that behind-the-scenes shit going on during training camp and Karl seems pretty laid back. To further my point, he cracked a beer in the Nuggets dressing room after the win in Toronto and said he prefers a cold beer over champagne. “After a win, beer tastes like champagne anyways."

Break up the Pistons! The boys in The D have been tearing it up lately and are currently riding a 7-game win streak. With guys like Rip, AI, ‘Sheed, Tayshaun etc., they should be tearing it up anyways, but up until their recent streak, they’ve pretty much been mediocre at best. The brightest spot during their streak is undoubtedly the play of Rodney Stuckey who has been lighting it up since being injected into the starting line up. Personally, I always compared Stuckey to D-Wade based on their size (Stuckey 6’5, 205, Wade 6’4, 215) and style of play but now Stuckey is putting up some serious digits as well. Fresh off a 40-point outing the week before, Stuckey hung 38 chips on Sacramento this past week and followed it up with another 24 against the Clips. He also copped Player of the Week honours in the Eastern Conference and if he keeps it up, the Pistons could find themselves knocking on the Cavs door in the Central division.

Rookie Check-Up: Anthony Morrow
Remember awhile back when Warriors guard Anthony Morrow was shredding teams up? Well now, not so much. Morrow’s minutes have been significantly decreasing over the last couple weeks and his scoring average is down to just over 9 chips a game compared to around 15 chips a game just about a month ago. A lot of it certainly has to do with his minutes but playing for a Don Nelson coached team, what do you expect? Nellie is notorious for giving guys 30+ mins. one night and giving them 5 the next and Morrow is no different. Last week Morrow clocked 8 mins. and 2 pts. in a loss to the Clips, and then clocked just 2 mins. and 0 pts. in another loss to the…Thunder. Wamp wamp waaaaamp.

Wilson Chandler. I’ve been meaning to mention this guy for a couple weeks now and how the Raps should trade Kapono and Hump for him. The Raps need an athletic, slashing swingman who can create his own shot and isn’t a liability on the defensive end. Enter Chandler. He’s an above average defender, solid rebounder, can score (14 ppg), is only in his 2nd year and best of all, is dirt cheap (only $7.5 mill over the next 4 years). Once the Knicks get Maybury’s insane contract off the books, they’ll have plenty of room for Hump and Kapono and even if they don’t intend on keeping these guys, they’re both decent trading chips in the future. NBA Week 9 - SirmacTV.com

What up y’all? Everyone have a good Christmas? With the slate of games on Christmas Day how could you not? Aside from the Orlando/New Orleans game (which was uggggly), you couldn’t really go wrong by watching any of the others; Roger Mason knocked down a game-winning 3 to lift San An over Phx…the Cavs/Wiz went right down to the wire (surprisingly!)…Dirk and the Mavs squeeked by Portland…and then of course you had the Celts/Lakers.

The C’s/Lakers was a hard-fought battle with the Lakers eventually trumping the Celtics and putting an end to their franchise record 19-game win streak. The game itself was a little sloppy at times with Pau Gasol going 0-for in the first quarter, Ray Allen shooting just 35% for the game and Rajon Rondo getting into foul trouble. At one point, Rondo and Ray-Ray even got into it running back on D until Pierce stepped in and pushed em’ away. In the end, it was ultimately the Lakers “D” that won them the game as they forced some key turnovers in the 4th and got the Staples crowd back into the game.

The Lakers and Celts had to keep their stars on the floor in crunch time which is a little different than normal because quite frankly, there isn’t usually crunch time with these teams. A common trend with top squads in the L is that they often beat down teams and can then rest their stars in the 4th quarter which is advantageous for obvious reasons. But what exactly does this mean? Well looking at the Raps, CB4 and Jose both log about 40 mins/game compared to guys like ‘Bron, Kobe, Garnett etc. who all clock about 35 mins./game. Now it’s only about a 5 mins/game difference but if you multiply that by the 82 game season, Jose and CB4 will have logged another 10+ games worth of minutes so come the playoff grind, they’re fatigued. Teams like the Cavs, Lakers and Celts are braced for a deep playoff run and you have to give credit to the coaches for managing minutes and keeping their guys well-rested.

Speaking of the Cavs, Lakers and Celts, there has never been a year where more teams have had such a strong start. As of Sunday, the Celts sit at 27-4, the Cavs are 26-4 and the Lakers are 25-5…and you have to give honourable mention to Orlando at 24-6. Of course you have the 95-96 Bulls who started 40-3 (and finished an NBA record 72-10) or the 71-72 Lakers who went 37-3, but to have this many teams still killing as we go into January is pretty extraordinary. Now it’ll just be a matter of seeing who’s built to last and whether or not the injury bug rears its ugly head.

To go along with the whole idea of being built to last, I recently found out that only three players have ever played 20 seasons or more in the NBA; Kevin Willis, Robert Parrish and of course, Kareem. The youngest of the three to retire was Kareem, at 42. However, in this day and age, where so many kids have entered the L straight out of high school (for better or for worse), 20 seasons doesn’t seem too outlandish for the athletes of today. Perhaps the NBA could very well see its first 25-year man! Guys like ‘Bron, KG and Kobe will all enter their 20th season at 37 and 38 years old (if they choose to keep playing) and given the extreme advances in health and nutrition compared to when Kareem was still ballin’ with those goggles on, a 25-year career may not be such a stretch.

So the NBA All-Star game is only about a month and half away, and the league just recently announced the participants in the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest. Defending his crown will be Dwight Howard who has to be the favorite going in. Alongside Dwight will be Rudy Gay (who I think is the only guy who can take out Dwight), past dunk contest winner Nate Robinson, and then a fourth participant who the fans get to decide (either Russell Westbrook, Joe Alexander or Rudy Fernandez). Like I said, Dwight has to be the heavy favorite going-in but I think if Rudy Gay is creative enough, he can take it down. Nate Rob has insaaaane hops but I just don’t think he’s gonna bring anything we haven’t already seen before. To vote on the fourth participant, go to http://www.nba.com/dunk/landing.jsp ...Even though I’m a huge Rudy Fernandez fan, Joe Alexander gets my vote…

Over the last couple weeks, there have been numerous trade winds in Raptorland including Kapono going to Denver for J.R Smith (which the Nuggs turned down) and also some other rumours including Jose bouncing for Steve Nash (with spare parts included). I’m pretty sure the Jose/Nash deal had no serious truth behind it and was pure speculation, and looking at where the two players in their careers, it’d be a stupid move to deal Jose for an aging Nash. I’m definitely an advocate for Nash and think it would be great for him to finish his career with Canada’s team, but in all reality, his best years are behind him and his legs have 6 more years of NBA run on them than Jose’s. From a statistical standpoint, both of their numbers are virtually identical so it’s not like you’d be gaining anything from that standpoint either. Jose averages 13, 9 and 3 while Nash puts up 15, 8 and 3. Nash is also 2nd in the L in turnovers while Jose is down around 60th or so. No deal.

Anyways, I’ll check y’all next week but for now, I’m out like Nate Rob’s chance at another dunk title…
